Lidl has rolled out contactless payments to all 600 of its UK stores, the latest retailer to enable the near field communication (NFC) technology for purchases reports Computerworld.
The contactless payments systems were installed in July, following a pilot in February, with over 65,000 transactions conducted in the first two weeks. The technology for the budget supermarket’s contactless payment systems was delivered by WorldPay as the Ingenico iPP350.
Aldi is also considering NFC driven technology and has trials underway. Contactless payments is nothing particularly new in Europe with M&S, The Co-Op. Costcutter and other retailers already processing more than a millions of transactions per week.
VISA recently found that post implementation, sales via contactless terminals has skyrocketed with payments up 22% in Q1 of 2013 vs. 2012. 25% of all cards issued and in use today, use contactless technology.
