Stuff wears out but needs to be fixed or repaired – unglamorous but necessary

Replacing an electrical wall socket with one with a more reliable switch or better reliability leaves one feeling quite satisfied that one has done a maintenance task well if you know the principles of electricity, can handle a screw driver and have the confidence.

This is especially true if one avoided giving oneself a shock in the process and the first use after replacement didn’t short out the power in the whole neighbourhood.

Renewal is important

I say, that if you change your mind-set regarding maintenance and fixing stuff to being just as valuable and important and consider building and making new stuff as a great opportunity but not something you get to do exclusively, then you can still have a very satisfying and fulfilled role in whatever your occupation happens to be.

I also suggest that you should not assume that everyone feels comfortable on the bleeding edge or in a role that is exclusively focused on innovation and the new.
